Anything goes wrong, anything at all...

images.jpgA 1971 John Wayne movie, Big Jake, has in my opinion, one of the greatest movie lines of all times -- "Now you understand.  Anything goes wrong, anything at all...your fault, my fault, nobody's fault...it don't matter...I'm gonna blow your head off.  It's a simple as that."

And while I understand the context of the statement and the sentiment behind it, I am not sure that kind of approch is going to get anyone very far today. And that makes the thoughts raised in my mind worth a scribble or two here

A few hours ago the State Council, the Chinese version of a Cabinet, released a White Paper on China's Peaceful Development and as noted in an earlier post I have advised reading the whole thing.  It's kind of long but just about everything here in China that is important is also kind of long...

Anyway, I did not come here to practice law beacuse I could not make it anywhere else, (a surprisingly often heard question ten years ago when I first got here).  Rather, I came here because working at the UN did not work for me personally (horrible dress code, low pay and way too far from the action for me).  And after having lived and worked outside of the US for almost two decades (since just after college) it does not really make sense to head back to San Francisco and dig back into Americana.

Nor does it make sense, to me anyway, to carry a John Wayne approach away from the shores of the USA and expect to be well recieved on the other end.  As in the cartoon, the end is not near...but things sure as hell are changing a lot.  And why not?

The good old days, like when I was a kid, were when a river caught on fire in Ohio, some out of control and way too young men with guns shot and killed some protesting students - also in Ohio, and I am sure that each person reading this has his or her own list of nasty stuff our countrymen have done to each other and the world that we wish we could take back...

So, rather than wishing the end was near, or pretending that yesterday was better than today or carrying a chip on our shoulders that comes out sounding like 'anything goes wrong, anything at all...'

How about if we all just agree that there is a lot of work to do and there are a lot of right answers out there?
